Spencer Brinker, PhD: Neuronavigation-Guided Focused Ultrasound System for Delivering Mechanical Stimulation to Brain: Initial Developments

Abstract

Noninvasive mechanical brain stimulation in the form of Pulsed Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (PLIFU) has recently shown promise as a neuromodulation method. PLIFU may serve as a treatment option for neurological disorders such as epilepsy or depression.  A custom device platform and method will be presented. The system is designed to mechanically stimulate the anterior temporal lobe and/or hippocampus using multi-target stimulation abilities. The aim of the proposed treatment is to reduce seizure frequency in subjects with temporal lobe refractory epilepsy.

Short Bio

Spencer is a Research Fellow in the Focused Ultrasound Laboratory at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and is a Fellow in the Ferenc Jolesz National Center for Image-Guided Therapy Multidisciplinary Program. His primary research is developing new focused ultrasound methods and technologies to treat brain disorders. Others aspects of his research include the application of these technologies to investigate transcranial mechanical wave propagation in the brain to better understand its influence on brain physiology. Spencer received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he specialized in experimental Magnetic Resonance Elastography.
